My only quibble with this is the implication that unemployed people have "stopped looking for work." Just because someone no longer collects unemployment, doesn't mean they've given up or stopped looking for work. Their job search may not be officially tracked any more, but none of the unemployed that I know ever stop looking for new work. Singles and people without kids can't get much in the way of government benefits - food stamps and Medicaid, but that's it - so they need to keep looking for work.

What a difference a few month makes.

Last month we were told by a fawning news media how great things were. The economy was a little engine that could.  And the declining unemployment rate was touted in headlines as significant progress toward economic recovery.

Unemployment rate falls to 7.8% in September, reported the Washington Post- a four-year low...”nearly”… whatever “nearly” means.
