Alice- I particularly agree with your assertion that some scientists are craven enough to essentially prostitute themselves for big research grants and the laudatory media coverage that comes along with supporting the libbies' "government is the answer to all, and must be enlarged" position. I made the same argument with a tenured liberal professor (to repeat myself) at an expensive private university in Texas. This individual, who found the NYT to be "straight reporting," often excoriated businessmen as willing to simply pillage and devastate the world, leaving their children and grandchildren to a bleak existence, simply in pursuit of a buck. Apparently, to liberal, tenured academics, scientists are pure, admirable, advanced human beings.

Businesspeople, however, like those that enabled the construct of that liberal professor's clothes, home, food, computer, car, phone, media sources, air travel system, and the like, are simply prostitutes for a dollar.

What could be more American than encouraging a robust debate on one of the most controversial issues of the day? The answer -- for some on the left, anyway -- is: lie about your opponents and make a pathetic effort to discredit them.
