Everything west of the Mississippi was acquired by the federal government from Britain, France and Mexico. Alaska was bought from Russia. Much of it was given away to homesteaders and railroads. None of it was taken from the American people.

Not true. Look at Texas. Our Constitution forbids the federal government from owning any land in Texas unless We The People vote to allow them to purchase it.

Most people understand that the federal government controls a lot of land, but few know just how vast the holdings really are.  The map above is courtesy of Investor's Business Daily.  It indicates the vast amounts of land, particularly in the natural resources rich western states, held by the federal government.
