The Harding-Coolidge administrations cut taxes and also cut federal spending by almost 50%. Truman cut federal spending by almost 2/3's. But today's pols can't cut 1%. Ignorance, greed, and moral decline are killing the country. Blame the voters as much as the politicians.

It's worse Than that. Harding, Coolidge, and Truman actually cut spending. What politicians call cuts today are just cuts in the rate of increase in spending. They had to increase spending in the dept of the recession (more unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc.) Any logical person would expect that government spending could, and should (even Keynes said so), go down as we recover. So all the hand wringing over the "fiscal cliff" is nothing but theater - but the media has to have a constant flow of crises to report on.

I am absolutely amazed that nobody has put any of the proposed “fiscal cliff” spending reductions in the context of a simple percentage. 

We somehow get lost in the diatribe about the defense industry being devastated, how it will take years to receive a hip replacement, and that poor grandma may be forced to eat dog food.  The fools of both political parties just can’t stop spending, which apparently is the only way to be elected in this socialist driven country.
