I think college students and their parents won Obama the election. Obama doubled Pell Grants to get kids started, took over the student loan programs to keep them going, and then, once they have themselves a rather large debt for their schooling, Obama suggests the possibility their loans might be forgiven. Nearly every campaign stop in a swing state was at a university. I'm a retired HS teacher and I've heard many former students suggesting that Obama was going to forgive their college debts. This not only won the student's vote, but very likely that of their parents also. Someone should do an investigative study!
Republicans find themselves in the unenviable position of being forced to agree to raise taxes on those earning more than $200,000 (the actual cut off for those Mr. Obama refers to as "millionaires and billionaires"), or risk being blamed for a tax increase on all taxpaying Americans. They will probably agree, which means it's a politically unavoidable policy, not a good policy.

Why does Obama insist upon raising taxes? Not because he believes it will improve the economy, and not because he believes it will increase receipts to the Treasury. The proposed taxes would bring in about $80 billion a...
