No, to borrow a Progressive term, these radical atheist groups are in fact Hate Groups. They hate God. They hate religion. They hate people who are religious. They hate ever having to hear anything related to religion. They must be some of the most miserable people alive. If they were truly happy why would they care so much if people perform their silly ceremonies and celebrations? No one is forcing them to acknowledge a high power. If the majority of people want to have a prayer the atheists can pause for a moment until the prayer is over. It only lasts a second or two. The religious people aren’t deeply offended that the atheists didn’t join in.

Well, you ignore everything we say about our issue being government endorsement of religion and go on acting like it's your beliefs themselves we object to (rather than merely disagree with). You'll never figure out how we think at that rate.

I don't know anything about God, there's more versions than I can count, and some are quite nice. I love people who are religious, they're my family and friends (and girlfriend). I hear things related to religion all the time and don't mind. I don't care about your silly ceremonies and celebrations.

But can't you do them without government support?

Maybe some atheists are mad because when people perform some little religious activity they feel left out. And they don’t like it! They don’t like feeling like an outsider! They don’t like being reminded they’re not a member of the group, a group which… they… didn’t.. want to belong to in the first place? OK. Now I’ve confused myself by trying to use reason to figure out how these nut-cases think.

A simmering controversy surrounding the "Ground Zero Cross" exposes the intolerance and absolutism behind ongoing battles over religious symbols on public property. Contrary to popular belief, it's not Christian conservatives who normally start these bitter disputes. It's more often atheist activists who seek to alter the long-standing status quo by scrubbing the landscape of the most visible signs of the nation's religious heritage.

American Atheists, an organization representing the civil liberties of agnostics, filed suit in 2011 to block display of the Ground Zero Cross anywhere on the grounds of the new memorial museum planned for the World Trade Center site....
