I agree. It's as though the GOP has been staring for a long time at a snapshot of how America used to be, instead of looking at the trends that shape the demographic and political landscape now and toward the future. It's like staring at a picture of a river, and then finding oneself in a dynamic reality of strange waters that don't seem to correspond with the picture anymore.

I agree. The GOP is painting itself into an exclusionist corner with some policies and dogma that it cannot successfully defend, and is actively disenfranchising much of its own moderate-conservative and socially libertarian middle ground, which is then by default ceded to the Democrats.

I sometimes do wonder why some of the reddest states are also the poorest, with the lowest level of average income.

I'm inclined to agree that, because we are (very) slowly working out of a deep, dark economic whole, people would rather continue a known slow progression rather than gamble on a radical course change that might not work.

Maybe those with strong social positions are the fringe of the Tea Party, but they are also the most visible face of the Tea Party to everyone else. That's a problem--
Great comments here and elsewhere at TownHall, noe_g. Thanks for expressing your point of view--

Good points. Thanks. I also have reservations about Republicans and conservatives support of "individual freedom" while at the same time wanting "big government mandate" to decide issues which really are a matter of personal conscience and individual authority, such as abortion.
