1) at this time, there is no evidence Holmes is mentally ill. To the contrary, he planned this in a very sane way. Simply because he acted in a way that showed reckless regard for human life does not mean he is, de facto, mentally ill; and 2) yes, violence is common all over the world. But if you think the level of violence that is seen today is comparable to what was seen in this Country 200 years ago -- or even 100 years ago -- you are burying your head in the sand. What we are witnessing is a downfall of civilization that is characterized by cold heartedness, egotism, hatred, greed and many other negative character flaws. The cause of this can be debated. As America reels from yet another devastating tragedy, the message of the ancient Hebrew prophets speaks to us afresh: A nation that is filled with violence is a nation on the verge of collapse. Consider where we stand today.

While grieving families in Aurora, CO come to grips with their agonizing losses, it is sobering to realize that the movie theater massacre was actually the sixth multiple-victim shooting in America so far in July, with a total of 24 killed and almost 100 wounded (again, this represents multiple-victim shootings only).
