The real fact is that a majority of the public has a vested interest in ignoring facts in favor of fantasy. Facts say “that which you tax you get less of, and that which you subsidize you get more of”. Fantasy says you can increase taxes on producers (e.g. younger workers and entrepreneurs) to support non-producers (e.g. retirees and welfare slugs) without affecting economic growth. Facts say all decisions involve tradeoffs. Fantasy says that Wise Men can make resources unlimited. Facts say that the only way you can lose weight is to exercise more and eat less. Fantasy says that there is a pill you can take or a device you can buy on QVC that will make you lose weight.

Governor Mitt Romney's choice of Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate is one of those decisions that seem obvious -- if not inevitable -- in retrospect, even though it was by no means obvious to most of us beforehand.
