Democrats (including many on TownHall) believe they have a "mandate" and don't have to compromise. If they had a mandate, they wouldn't have to compromise. They would have enough votes in the Senate to avoid any filibusters. But if they keep repeating "Obama has a mandate" often enough, they hope people will believe it. Some already do. Elections have consequences. Obama campaigned to win, but he didn't campaign to get a sizable enough majority to get a mandate. He's going to have to deal with that consequence.

One suspects that Obama doesn't _want_ a mandate. If he did, he couldn't blame the Republicans for anything that goes wrong.
Democrats have said that that their priorities when it comes to a fiscal cliff deal are to raise more tax revenue and make the tax code more progressive.

Which is why it's odd to see them drawing a line in the sand on raising tax rates.

Raising marginal income tax rates is one of the most economically harmful ways to raise taxes. (The only provisions of the tax code that are more damaging are the corporate income tax and taxes on savings and investments.) Perhaps the only explanation is that Democrats don't actually care about...
