To me Chicago implies Mafia. I guess it could be considered an ethnic slur but not racial. It also implies Party control over government. That can apply to any race and any ethnic group. I find it strange that so many consider Hispanics to be a different race. When does a language define a race? Here in New Mexico we have Hispanics who are descended from the Spanish conquerors of Mayan Mexico. We have Mexicans. We have Central Americans. We have South Americans. We may even have a few Cubans. We may have some Puerto Ricans. And we have people who are directly from Spain. Is this a race? Is it even an ethnic group? Everyone in New Mexico enjoys New Mexican quisine. Are we all Hispanics. Some Gringos speak better Spanish than some Hispani

It should come as no surprise that Hispanic became a race under LBJ before that Hispanics were considered Caucasoid or white. Leave it to a southern democrat who fought the civil rights movement to a stand still and only gave in when there was a veto proof majority thanks to the nearly 100% Republican support and the few democrats that crossed the party line that he gave in a signed the civil rights act into law.

Right. Hispanics can be of any race.

I'm of German heritage and quite pale. 6 months ago at work it would have been possible to line-up my Spanish-speaking co-workers in a continuous gradient between nearly as light-skinned as I am through every possible shade of tan and brown to darker than 75% of our black co-workers.

In 2004, Arnold Schwarzenegger, then a popular figure in the Republican Party, gave an exciting, upbeat and surprisingly funny speech at the GOP convention. He covered a lot of territory: the story of how he came to America, how he became a Republican after listening to Richard Nixon, and other highlights of his life story.

Afterwards, then-CBS News anchor Dan Rather reported that Schwarzenegger "slapped John Kerry around like a hockey puck."

The only problem: Schwarzenegger never mentioned John Kerry, not even once.

I bring it up because it's hardly news that much of the press likes...
