It makes sense to call them Native Americans because, while the original inhabitants came from elsewhere, they were still the original inhabitants; they were no other peoples here already that they displaced. So your point misses its mark. The European settlers, by contrast, arrived in a land already occupied and went about spreading their diseases and otherwise decimating the natives.
