I'm old enough to remember "hospitalization insurance." Then there was Blue Shield to cover doctor's fees. Everything else was cash for service. Now a medicaid patient gets a cold and goes to the ER. When I passed through the waiting room the last time my son was in an ER, the waiting room was jammed with folks who did not appear to need such service. Oh my son went from ER to ICU, not home with a script.

There are a few places and times where I, a white female, have felt marginalized in my seven plus decades. The first was high school where there were sports for boys but none for girls. However, we girls could take all of the upper level science and math courses with the boys even though we were in the minority. The second was when I taught in a school where the majority of the students and faculty and all of the administration were black. It was three years of pure hell. I could never do anything right, nor could several of the other white teachers. As a taxpayer in that school district I've never supported a tax increase or bond issue since I left that school more than two decades ago. The third and the most serious was in my parish where I was considered a bigot for adhering to my beliefs in Church teaching on marriage, abortion and stem cell research. I watched people walk out if a priest dared preach Church teaching on those topics.

Many, but not all. Just as MacArthur island hopped, get those who can and do read on the page. Some of our most liberal elite institutions have the highest admission standards and are the bastions of political correctness and liberalism. So parents of kids who attend such institutions from Harvard, Yale, Bowdoin, to Cal Berkley, Stanford and USC encourage your kids to read one or more of Dr. Sowell's suggested books.
