Shane, From a historical perspective, the ideological difference between Hitler and Stalin (aside from leading two neighboring countries in time of war) was smaller than that between Hitler and Goehring. Sycophants of President Obama defend his policies . . irrationally . . by pointing out that George W. Bush did a lot of the same things. I have yet to see any liberal acknowledge that George W. Bush had some pretty strong opposition among conservatives.
The top three reasons President Obama will never write this letter: 3) The Constitution, in his view, has an unspecified 'blind spot'. 2) All evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, he doesn't have any reason to believe he will be defeated in the next election. 1) He is pathologically incapable of acknowledging that he might have been wrong about something.

Dr. Sowell, Once again, you have delivered an accurate, incisive commentary in support of our conservative cause, and I thank you. I feel compelled, however, to ask after your health, and your sleeping habits. It is never impossible for a Democrat to deny the facts.

Flirting with fallacy

I lament that we live in a society in which people must be reminded that 'catastrophe is not a good thing'. This being said, I will point out the fact that catastrophes, by definition, cannot be predicted. We can see a flood coming, and the same is true of a hurricane. With a little forethought, we can at least attempt to prepare ourselves against them, but they still cannot be predicted with any hope of accuracy. In the same way, we can recognize the conditions that most commonly spawn a tornado, but we still cannot predict where one will happen, nor the path it might follow. Please let us dispense with sensational speculation about what the broader world can or should do about a national catastrophe of the sort that recently struck Japan.
Mr. Hewitt, I submit that this brutal view of reality has been readily apparent to everyone who cared to see for the last ten years running, and I will date that to the power plant crisis in California, which led directly to the recall of then-governor Gray Davis. And I am ONLY talking about California! I do not care to speculate about the rest of the nation, for the simple reason that I have not personally borne witness to those depredations. For the same reason, I have forsworn comment on the idiosyncratic "leadership" that is coming out of D.C., but I ask you to note that the tiresome quotation marks were deliberate. I have no doubt that Barack Obama is a very learned man, but his claim to exceptional intelligence falls further into...
There is a paradigm involved here: If you feel compelled to identify yourself as non-racist, the opposite is probably true. As in, "I'm not racist, but . . ." I agree wholeheartedly with Mrs. Malkin's article on this subject.

To Mary: I have never in my life conformed to GOP standards, but I remain a steadfast supporter of conservative values. If you are allowing a political ideology to shape your views, I submit that you are more damaging to this nation than Barack Obama himself.

Uncivil Unions

140 years ago, there was no minimum wage. There were no labor unions. If you were lucky enough to get a job in the first place, you worked any hours the boss wanted. You worked as many hours as the boss asked for. And if the boss took a fancy to your 13-year-old daughter, you did what you had to do in order to keep your job. Labor unions changed all that, and this is the ONLY thing I will say in their defense! 140 years ago, a young man who brought home one dollar every day was considered to be an up-and-coming bachelor, but rarely had either the time or the opportunity to indulge himself. 140 years ago, a young man who accepted a job from any employer agreed as a condition of that employment to preserve, protect, and defend that...

Reckless Spending

It occurs to me that, when the nation finally goes bankrupt, government spending will come to an abrupt end. Maybe that is what Obama has in mind? It's not the fall that kills you. The sudden stop at the bottom does that.
