Look at who the liberals appeal to: those too young and therefore ignorant to know better; those coming from worse, more oppressive places and too ignorant to realize the policies of the left here are just another shade of that same gray; the greedy; the anarchists; the union thugs; the anti-social, violent gangs; anyone anti-religion; the gays, et al; and anyone who sees social standards and morals as repressive.
