As a member of the armed services (1954 - 58) the gutsiest thing that Eisenhower did was to integrate the services This gave many Americans, mostly men, their first real interaction with blacks and other minorities. Doesn't seem like much today, but believe me, to do that in the 50's took more guts from one man than the whole collection of todays DC pols could ever muster!
