Labor Day - I'm Not Celebrating
Although now retired and on honorary withdrawals, during my 34-year career I did indeed belong to SEVEN unions (all in the private sector, by the way). As I doubt anyone else on this blog can claim that, I think my experience gives me a unique perspective.
I can tell you my unions were all jokes, lumbering, self-limiting, crooked, and onerous to me as an ambitious worker. They were champions, not of the worker, but of mediocrity and hypocrisy. They were an anchor to initiative and fair competition.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that ultimately I would have been better off in all aspects of my work, wages and benefits included, if my workplaces had NOT been unionized. And I KNOW the companies I worked for...

On Climate, Bad News Will Resume
I am witnessing irrefutable proof. I am looking out my widow right now and nothing could be more obvious than the temperature is cooling. I can see my breath at night. The grass in my lawn is dying. Flowers are turning a sad, sad brown and falling to earth. Leaves are succumbing to acid rain (or something like that)and plummeting temperatures and pathetically zigzagging to an earthly grave. Birds are flying south. I haven't seen a hummingbird in weeks. The skies are definitely grayer than a couple months ago, too.
The world is clearly doomed.
If only I had bought a Prius.
