Confessions of a Bad Woman

Ms Charen, I have admired your writing and points of view for at least a decade. My appreciation for this article is no exception. In looking at females to admire for their accomplishments and contributions to society through their art, may I suggest Anne Sofie von Otter, a Swedish singer-musician and (musical) stage actress who often performs in the USA and throughout the world.

Dear Loyal Democrat, You are speaking from your heart, not your head, I presume. You offer no data, with attendant analysis and conclusion, to support your cry of pain for others. My suggestion: think globally and act locally, yourself, to reduce the demand for items and services manufactured and created in the USA. Be as poor as those with whom you sympathize, but don't demand the government make the rest of as poor also. Your creed seems to be that everyone in the world should be equally miserable. Please start with yourself.
Born in the USA where I lived for 65 years, then moved to Stockholm for family reasons 10 years ago. The weather: same latitude as the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, 100 miles south of Anchorage: 59 degrees. The winters are not especially cold, compared with the North Dakota and nearby states, but they are long. Sweden is not a socilaist state--it is a nanny state, and the Swedes like it this way. They voted for it and finance it through their taxes. The current ruling coalition is dominated by the more conservative of the eight political parties. It would look like a moderate Democrat party in the USA. The Swedes have a good grip on finances and do smart things in this realm. More to say, but there seems to be a word limit here...

Romney scares very much less than Obama scares me.

Why Not Junk the Nobel Peace Prizes?

Ron P Wrote: Apr 06, 2012 7:01 AM
I'm glad you noted the Peace Prize is awarded by an entity in Norway, not in Sweden. Here is official language from the Nobel Organization: "The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Swedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by a Swedish organisation but by the Norwegian Nobel Committee." Sweden granted Norway independence a few years after Alfred Nobel activated his legacy.
