God Will Not Be Mocked

@ HoG: a book from God that did not address absolute and universal truths wouldn't be worth much. That would make unreliable as a source of information, and difficult to apply to current situations. @SO: "Right in the right way" isn't drivel. It's Aristotle's "Nichomachean Ethics," second only to the Bible, albeit distantly second. I'm sure you've met people you've agreed with, but they were so obnoxious you wanted to hit them. An illustration of this would be a doctor fixing a broken arm by cutting it off. Yeah, it does get rid of the problem, but the methodology seems lacking.

Why wouldn't it be of much worth? Aren't you making more assumptions? Are you open to the possibility that maybe God had a different agenda or that maybe human beings didn't interpret it properly? The bible has been used to justify many different assumptions over the ages. I don't see how our assumptions today are any more logical than the assumptions of the past.

I'm not following your reasoning here. I would certainly hope that God has a different agenda than human beings, and I assume that traditionally, humans haven't interpreted His word correctly. You're right in that it's been used to justify a lot of different and contradictory assumptions. But none of that has anything to do with whether or not the book itself is unchanging or not, inaccurate or not. One good rule of thumb is a solid distrust of elitism and "enlightenment." If an interpretation involves a lot of "gymnastics," it's probably wrong.

Okay, I'm glad you concede that traditionally humanity's interpretation of God (and you could probably apply this to other religions outside of Christianity as well) has not always been correct. I think we can all agree for the most part how the bible READS. But I don't think we can all agree on what it MEANS. That's why there are thousands of different Christian denominations. They all can't be right, but they all can be wrong. The problem is most of those Christians aren't open to that possibility and I think that's an error that can have grave implications.

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. ~ Abraham Lincoln

America has forsaken her first love. She has finally, and fully, given herself over to a licentious Lothario with whom she has increasingly flirted since her youth. He is sin – and, notwithstanding full knowledge of who he is and what he intends, with him she has lain.

America has tasted the poisonous fruits of lust, pride, passion, and envy – sloth, frivolity, iniquity and entitlement. She has tasted of their sweet deception and found...
