Are You an "Extremist"?

Dr. Sowell's mention of the left-wing use of the term extremist — to describe any conservative they don't like — reminds me that the so-called “mainstream” news media have been playing fast and loose with our language in other ways as well. They have made a bad joke out of the formerly honorable term liberal, derived from the Latin term referring to a free man. As a result, the term libertarian had to be coined to describe a person who believes in freedom of action or thought. What's really “liberal” about the supporters of big government with restricted freedom?

They have also made a bad joke out of the term progressive. Where are they “progressing” to? If their route takes us over an economic cliff, is that progress? ...
