Micheal, Many hotels will keep your luggage at the desk or bellhop station during the day, before or after check-in. And I think a later checkout can be arranged. The problem with your late afternoon shower is that the hotel still has to get the room ready for that night's occupant.

Few things can make you appreciate home like staying in a hotel. This includes not only low-budget, bare bones hotels but also sweepingly large and ornate luxury hotels. What many hotels seem to have in common are needless hassles.
