Third point I attempt to make is that our current system has in it barriers and limitations that are placed differently at the bottom of the wealth scale and get less as you rise on the wealth scale. This presents a different system the poor live in compared to the middle class and yet the middle class lives with in a system that is different compared to the upper class. Being poor is not merely an outcome of poor choices and lack of initiative. We can simply pay the poor to be complacent in our society or we can eliminate the differences in the systems. Life teaches us that this will be eternal task so our real question is how much barriers and limitations can we easily get rid of and how much can we easily pay?

When my wife was a liberal, she complained that libertarian reasoning is coldhearted. Since markets produce winners and losers -- and many losers did nothing wrong -- market competition is cruel.
