In the end the state will always fail as it has failed throughout all history. The Democrats/Progressives will fail as the European welfare states are failing right now. You don't give a citizen fish:you teach him how to fish and earn his own living. Government is a false god as the Hispanics will learn again after immigrating from states that couldn't satisfy them with goodies. They're not too smart, unfortunately. The blacks in this country still haven't learned because of the Obama current lessons that you can rely on the state for goodies and your life!

Domestically, meanwhile, the right was largely a "leave me alone coalition": Religious and traditional conservatives, overtaxed businessmen, Western libertarians, and others fed up with government social engineering and economic folly. The foreign policy battle against tyrannical statism abroad only buttressed the domestic antagonism toward well-intentioned and occasionally democratic statism at home.
