As I recall, President George H. W. Bush obtained a "promise" from the Democrats that if he proposed and supported new taxes, the Democrats would go along with spending cuts, and the deficits would be reduced. He raised taxes; they did not cut spending. Indeed, they spent even more. After all, they had new tax money available! Then, they used his comment "Read my lips, no new taxes" to beat him up in the next election, resulting in the election of President Clinton. Just goes to show that no politician can be trusted, regardless of party. Makes a good argument for term limits, whether statutorily or by voting.
