I'm glad you mentioned the Church as point number one. As a Catholic who loves his Church, I am dismayed by Church leaders bemoaning the attack on religious liberty while allowing their responsibilities to erode over the past century. Care for the elderly is replaced by Social Security. Care for the poor replaced by Welfare. Care for the hungry replaced by Food Stamps. Care for the sick replaced by Medicaid, Medicare, and now Obamacare. Christians should have shouted "That's our job" at each of these programs. If more Americans took the obligation to personally give 10% to their Church or local charities, we'd not be arguing over whether 20, 30, 40, or 50% is the fair tax rate.

There's a reason gun sales are through the roof, gold advertisements are everywhere, products like survival seeds have started to creep into the edges of our consciousness, and Doomsday Preppers now runs on National Geographic. It's the same reason people have started asking about ways to hedge their money against inflation and which countries they can flee to if America falls apart. A decade ago, the idea that America could economically collapse because of a default on its debt seemed ludicrous, but we now know it's entirely possible that the country could turn into Greece within...
