Most professors' salaries are anything but "soaring." Unless they are faculty at prestigious research universities, most full-time, tenured profs have salaries lower than a typical K-12 teacher's. At the research universities, profs with big salaries typically receive only part of their pay from the institution, and secure the rest through grants. Furthermore, there is an increasing trend at most universities--large and small--in hiring part-time instructors with very low pay and little or no benefits. It's also worth keeping in mind that somebody has to teach online courses. I've taught more than a few myself and can vouch for the fact that designing and teaching a good online class requires plenty of effort from a real person.
