The most interesting point in this column is that the outsized reaction to Palin says more about us than it does about her. And the reactions to her are freakishly grotesque. She turns people into monsters. Seems everyone wants her to be two dimensional, but in completely different ways. No one wants her to be the three dimensional, apparently upbeat, intellegent and charismatic person she seems to be on honest assesment. I hope Palin's good nature survives the abuse. And I hope the guilty don't wait for a resolution of the culture war to confess and be rid of their weird, irrational hatred of this otherwise random person.

Now that I think about it: How can an UpperWestSide liberal Jew have "empathy" for a Catholic Nebraska wheat farmer, a Morman carpet installer, a Baptist, Nashville sound technician whose whole life just got flushed into the Gulf of Mexico? If empathy is on the table, should you not have to prove you have some empathy for the vast majority of Americans--not just the denizens of the progressive echo-chamber and the permanent underclass they nurture? For a strict constructionist, it makes sense to claim that family and social ties don't matter. But for a justice who's expected to show 'empathy'....? Why are they hiding all her social ties?? Here's a few more I'd love answers to: "When is the last time you ate a purely social meal...

The real irony here is that the DEMS are usually the ones screaming for "empathy" on the bench. How can someone who's such a complete cultural alien to the heart of the country have empathy for it's residents?
