"The bully pulpit of the Presidency can’t paper over wounds, but it can serve as a salve"? Block that metaphor!

A Glowing Report on Radiation

1489 comments so far, but how many of the writers actually went and read the studies that Coulter referred to? About one hundredth as many as went to their Roget's to look up synonyms for "wacky." The study about the Taiwan apartments was indeed written by serious academic scholars and did indeed find that the people in the apartments had been less likely to develop cancers than the general population. The other studies tended to be more about what they call the "Linear No-Tolerance" theory (that any amount of radiation is harmful, and that the harm increases in line with the amount). The theory does seem to be on a shaky foundation, to judge from the studies I looked at, and the absence of evidence for harm at low doses (e.g. from...

Worry Over Trade Deficits

I almost always agree with Dr. Williams, as I do with the point of this article. However, it is too easy to say that Americans can just stop buying Chinese. That is what my wife and I resolved to do, 12 or 15 years ago. We didn't want to show up at church in clothes that might have been made by a someone who was in prison for going to church. But we soon gave up. The last effort was an umbrella. I needed one, but after two weeks and 15 stores visited, I could not find one that was not made in China. Individual action is important, but sometimes it just isn't enough.
I'm irked that everyone feels the "context" shows Sherrod was just a fine person and not a racist. She said she regretted having intended to deny white farmers their rights because of their color. I'm glad for her regrets, but change the colors around. I'm a retired white teacher and I taught blacks and whites in a career that spanned four decades. I don't consider myself the least bit special when I say when there was never a single moment when it even occurred to me that I might give the black students less care. I repeat: I am not special, this is not a brag. I never heard any fellow teacher, white or black, ever say they knew of any teacher who had ever considered such behavior.
In the last century over 50 million people have immigrated to the U.S. Does that mean we have 50 million unemployed? Of course not. Jobs are not a zero sum game. Each immigrant brings to this country skills and grit that enrich us all. So I agree with the author: instead of adding more enforcers at the border, let's add more consular officials to speed up the immigration process. Keep the penalties for being in this country illegally, yes indeed, but if the illegals know they can return to (say) Mexico and then re-enter speedily and legally, you can bet they will find their way out and back. Then U.S. employers can use their HR resources to screen for good applicants, not for hassling with the government.
