While true that the Revolutionary war was over excessive taxation, it was really for something more important, and more fundamental. We revolted against the idea that there was a class of people who had a blood right to rule us. We rejected their rules, declaring our right to decide for ourselves how our nation was run. That was profound.
Absolutely both sides are equally to blame, I believe Mr. Codevilla got it right in his definition of the ruling class here: http://spectator.org/archives/2010/07/16/americas-ruling-class-and-the# The key basic truth of the Constitution is that We the People, you and I and all of us are in control. So really, if you want to be honest in assessing blame for our mess, that truly rests on each and every one of us: we let them get away with it. But, we do have the power to fix it also. At the ballot box, just as we did last November, only more so.
Yes, we do have the right to an education, the only questions are content and how it is paid. Yes, the parents are responsible to pay for it, payment via taxes, mostly local and state. Take a look at the documentary movie Waiting for Superman, excellent movie on education today. It shows plainly just how broken our system of today is. Bottom line, our costs have skyrocketed, and our national test score averages have dropped, consistently, for quite a few years. And the worst part is, we know what works also, people are out there doing it, and having incredibly positive results in the worst of the worst school districts. The good news is that this is one that We the People can take care of, get some sort of voucher system...
