Benedict seems to have been a pope with strong backbone. We now need a Latin American pope. The future of the Catholic church will be its' strength in the Americas, for a time until Europe can possibly be brought back.

Richard19, guided by the Holy spirit, tells us what the Holy Catholic church 'needs'. What presuption! This is not an 'election' for Governor of Arkansas.

Well good point, but my intent is that the Americas, especially to the south in the Latin American nations, the people are still strongly faithful to God by and large. Perhaps a Latin American pope would help strengthen the church overall. The church shouldn't be political I agree but perhaps it must strategize. The Holy Spirit will indeed provide signs, but perhaps men make decisions from this.

"To govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

With those brave, wise, simple words, Benedict XVI announced an end of his papacy. How stands the Church he has led for eight years?

While he could not match the charisma of his predecessor, John Paul II, his has been a successful papacy. He restored some of the ancient beauty and majesty...
