A fellow NRA member and I were discussing this topic yesterday. There are easily over 300 million firearms in private possession in the USA. The membership of the NRA is just over 4 million. The NRA is a minority organization in comparison to American gun owners per capita. We are simply the most recognizable representation of the demographic.
