What???? That is speaking on jealousy and greed. The Bible commanded that followers of God give to the poor. It is all throughout the old testament. I think you are revisioning the Bible to fit your politics.

Growing up Catholic, I was taught that we had a responsibility to those who are unable to fend for themselves, not every self-described disenfranchised group or individual.

You miss the point. Read your bible, Jesus was speaking to his disciples and believers, in other words, churches and churches are still the best at charities. No where does the bible teach that government is responsible for taking care of others and Jesus meant the needy and afflicted, NOT THE LAZY!

Rev. G misses the lesson Jesus taught in his story of the Good Samaritan. That Samaritan used his own money to help a person who was not able bodied, thanks to some who were parasitic takers, who left the man disabled on the roadside.
And The Good Samaritan did not ask his government to help the wounded victim, but used his own personal wealth. That will be impossible if income is redistributed by our Government, according to their personal wisdom, and intellectual superiority (so they think).

Rev G:
In NO PLACE in the Bible did Jesus (or God) tell people they MUST give of their money to the GOVERNMENT to help the less fortunate. Individuals help others. Yes Jesus told the Rich man to give away his money to the poor, but it had to be a FREE WILL gift...and he couldn't do it. Government doesn't give us the free will to pay taxes and then spend our money willy-nilly.

The poor the bible speaks of are the lame, the blind, widowed, and the orphans. I don't recall the poor ever being the abled bodied. When Jesus healed, the person usually got up praised God and went his way. I don't recall them ever asking for a hand out.
My open letter to my black Christian friends, written out of respect and solidarity, generated an extremely high number of email responses. They ranged from commendation to condemnation, with one email informing me that neither “you nor I are going to alter prophecy, these things are foretold, we have to pray now GOD will get us out of here before masses get destroyed!”

Espiritus offered a unique perspective: “The Black, Youth and Latino ‘vote’ is being used [by the Chinese] for the outcome [of the] 2012 election. . . . Under Komrad Obama, America’s military will be emasculated,...
