The free market, in the political arena is doing just that. In 30 states the people have elected Republican governors to countact the excesses of the federal government. In 24 of those 30 states the people have also elected majority Republican legislatures. The only reason that democrats win at the federal level is because of the way the electoral college are gifted in a winner take method, which benefits democrats by high concentrations of population in a limited number of large cities.
