I think you're right, but it is a lose-lose setup for the GOP. If they cave, Obama wins his tax on the (somewhat) wealthy, the GOP can't make an issue about the economic impact, and the GOP's cowardice further alientates the party base. If they stand firm, Obama gets even more taxes while he can loudly blame the GOP for the economic impact.

“We’ve had a spirited debate this year about the future of our country,” New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte explained on Saturday during this week's GOP address. “The American people expect Republicans and Democrats to work together to solve the difficult challenges we face.
