Most gun-related homicides are committed with handguns (72.5% in 2011). Most gun-related homicides are committed with guns that are obtained illegally, ie, on the street, through theft, etc. (93%). Most gun-death victims know their killers (~75%). More people were murdered with hammers (496) than rifles (323) in 2011. Only 2% of prison inmates use a military-style semiautomatic gun in the commission of their gun-related crime.
