Well, count me among his detractors. I don't argue that he was a bad pitcher, just the most over-rated. And there is no objective measure by which you can claim he belongs in the top 30 pitchers of all time, let alone the top 5. He got a lot of strikeouts, no doubt about that. But I'll take a guy like Maddux, who got the ground ball with a runner on second every time over a guy like Ryan who had to throw 10 pitches to get two outs. Plus, Ryan walked 4.7 men every 9 innings. Ryan won an average of 12 games per season, which, without doing the math, I'm betting is among the worst of any of the 300 game winners.

Trying to choose the greatest pitcher of all time is at least as difficult as trying to choose the greatest hitter of all time. In both cases, the best we can do is narrow down the list.
