Do Gun Control Laws Control Guns?

There are two parts to this equation and Dr. Sowell focuses only on one. To reduce violence we need more guns in the hands of good people (as Dr. Sowell points out) AND reduce the number of guns in bad people's hands. Liberals solution is to remove everyone's guns which violates rule one. Conservatives focus on preserving one, not working on two. We need to work on two as we agree on that basic point.

Except that you can't prevent criminals from getting guns. They don't buy them in Cabelas, they steal them or get them on the black market.

Criminals simply won't obey laws or regulations.

I was not thinking we need more laws, but more enforcement of laws on the books (gun violations production is way down under Mr. Holder) and better training for gun owners to use, store and protect their guns from getting into the wrong hands.

There are laws against criminals with guns committing crimes, Reed. Prosecuting them is how you take care of the second part of the equation.

The libs would call that move racist...they already whine about the demographics in prisons.

Dan,
Exactly. And exactly the opposite of what Mr. Holder's department is doing.
The gun control controversy is only the latest of many issues to be debated almost solely in terms of fixed preconceptions, with little or no examination of hard facts.

Media discussions of gun control are dominated by two factors: the National Rifle Association and the Second Amendment. But the over-riding factual question is whether gun control laws actually reduce gun crimes in general or murder rates in particular.

If, as gun control advocates claim, gun control laws really do control guns and save lives, there is nothing to prevent repealing the Second Amendment, any more than there was anything to prevent repealing the...
