We keep trying to make sense about what the Obama administration is doing. The Chicago way is about getting elected and staying in office through patronage, not about doing what is right for all citizens. It is about being a Politician-Citizen, not the other way around. It is about rewarding those who will vote for you and punishing those who do not. The rational debates we seek to have over policy alternatives make no more sense than arguing that Capone made some bad choices to his approach to solving his fellow citizens problems in finding something to drink.

The whole idea is that science should follow a path dictated by its discoveries, not by someone's agenda be it religious or secular. Today, conclusions are postulated first and then funding follows to prove the conclusions were correct whether they are or are not. Recent decades are filled with politically driven research that has done little to advance our knowledge. I am less concerned with someone's religious beliefs than I am with whether they will let science find its own path rather than conforming to some political agenda which may have no connection to the actual truth.
