"If increasing your income by $10,000 would cause you to lose $15,000 in government benefits, would you do it?" I would, for sure, because I view government assistance as a shameful and absolute last resort for me. I didn't even take unemployment during my time off. I'm proud and independent. I resent those on the left who want to try and force me to hold their hand, like I'm some child that needs constant monitoring. This is my life to live, and I don't expect anyone else to care, or to accommodate me.

rc,

I'm much like you. After 10 years as an engineer at a big aerospace firm, I was laid off (along with 150 others) because the bean counters decided the younger people could do our work.

I had about $30K in my savings/checking account and over $100K in my 401K, so I never applied for unemployment. To me, that just went against my principles, even though I knew my employer and I had contributed to that fund. Friends and family thought I was stupid for not taking advantage of 'what was mine'. But I'm the type of guy (like you) that walks the walk, doesn't just talk the talk.

I really respect you for your convictions, since I've lived them myself.

It always boggles my mind when so-called staunch conservative friends of mine chose to start tapping into Social Security while they're still gainfully employed, and then just use the extra money for vacations and toys.

I suppose it's human nature, but it's the basest of nature to me to take money, just because you can.

Its in the same way people take tax deductions that's not Stealing and it's not wrong either there are certain things the gov. does that they have decided we will spend our money on if we don't take advantage of those deductions and so forth than we are giving up a chunk of our wealth that-we shouldn't have.
