The GOP was the token opposition party from FDR till Reagan. But they learned that socialism grows political careers, not capitalism. Our problem is systemic, not political. We have a system that can't regulate itself in a vicious cycle of growth and dependence. The carcass of the USA will have some pretty big vultures fighting over the remains.

The only answer anyone ever seems to be able to offer to that question these days is, "Because the Democrats are worse." However, the problem with being the lesser of two evils is that you're still an evil.
