Even if the data would point that way we wouldn't know because such studies are never done on socialist states. They are only done on others to promote the cause of socialism but typically of the Left the cause is the goal and needs never to be justified by actual success.

It is always the case. BTW, in Utopia that we refer to so often, free and happy citizens engaged in fine arts and philosophical discussions, while SLAVES did all the work not worthy of the privileged. Typical socialism, minus starvation and concentration camps.

In the USSR, the elites were calling themselves "servants of the people" and boasted that their salaries were (sometimes) same or less of a qualified worker, Duh, they got FREE housing in posh neighborhoods, FREE or heavily subsidized food, goods and services, "dachas", limousines, foreign travel without restrictions, education with clear prospects to work abroad, even special tailors and shomakers that alleviated the pain of wearing ridiculously ugly domestic clothes and shoes (butt of the numerous jokes). If anything of their goods was domestic, it was basically custom made, on a totally different quality scale. Hypocrisy of the ruling class was weapon-grade, and the worst tragedy? - to be weened off from the trough.

The political slogan "Forward" served Barack Obama well during this year's election campaign. It said that he was for going forward, while Republicans were for "going back to the failed policies that got us into this mess in the first place."

It was great political rhetoric and great political theater. Moreover, the Republicans did virtually nothing to challenge its shaky assumptions with a few hard facts that could have made those assumptions collapse like a house of cards.
