There is no need to raise rates. Just get government out of the way and put people to work so they will pay taxes. No one on unemployment or welfare is paying taxes. If welfare is cut, unemployment limited to only 13 weeks, Obama phones stopped, food stamps reduced to only the true poor, disability must be proved by compelling evidence of physical or mental disability other than the desire not to work, etc, People would go to work. It is stupid to provide more under welfare than most would earn if they worked.

Actually, raw, those who are on unemployment compensation do pay taxes, their tax load is 10%, with the option of having it deducted or paying it at the end of the year when they file. And file they indeed have to do, and their UC is filed as a lump sum 1099g. It's so much fun to figure out how to pay for those additional taxes when you're either still unemployed or newly employed and desperately trying to get back on your feet.

Even Paul Ryan admits that you're wrong.

The costs of Medicare are soaring so high that extra revenue from reduced unemployment won't close that gap.

The only way to fix this problem is to cut Medicare costs by reforming it. The problem is, the public doesn't want that.

It’s been a year and half since the GOP and Democrats hammered out an agreement that raised the debt ceiling and put us on the lip of a fiscal cliff, threatening mutually assured destruction if a budget deal wasn’t worked out before January 2013.

It made sense for all sides at the time.

The GOP figured there was a good shot that Obama wasn’t going to be reelected. The Democrats figured there was a good chance shot Obama wasn’t going to be reelected. And Obama was content to do what he did best: run a campaign on TV, eat...
