You are right, Jay, it's not about keeping the children safe (look at the consequences of Roe v Wade), it's about control. One of the most important things that must be done to control any population is to make sure they are disarmed.

It's also about core beliefs in ones' perception of life. For those of us who believe we are endowed by our Creator with free will we maintain that free will bestows liberty and the responsibility of consequences. We're not omnipotent so we attempt to maintain sane levels of control that prevent anarchy and factious confederacies.
For those who argue that free will is a fiction there is inevitably the call for a 'benevolent tyranny'. Liberty in society has its' moments of tragedy for the misuse of freedoms but tyranny, be it benevolently or malevolently constructed shares a common element with socialism. It guarantees an equal distribution of misery masked by the promise of utopia.

Mark Mattioli on Monday in Hartford, Connecticut speaking in front of a gun violence task force. Mattioli receives a standing ovation at the end of his testimony in which he declares that more gun laws are not the solution--the massacres are only the "symptom" he says.
