Meaningful Work

I disagree with the implication that emptying bed pans and collecting garbage are not "meaningful work". To paraphrase a character from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged", there are no mean jobs, only mean people who refuse to perform these jobs (The meaning of "mean" here is "inferior in grade, quality, or character".) Whether or not a job is meaningful depends on the character and attitide of the person doing it. Any job that needs doing, like emptying a bed pan, is meaningful. That a job has low economic value or is uninviting to do does not make it less meaningful. It is the attitude of the person who thinks a job is beneath him that makes it meaningless.
We’ve been treated to numerous claims that Mr. Obama agonized over authorizing the operation to kill bin Laden (an operation which did not involve moving heaven and earth) and that it was a courageous decision. How can he (through his campaign) criticize Mr. Romney’s comment about not moving heaven and earth to kill one person, the implication being that it is abominable not to do so. If this is really the case, Mr. Obama would not have agonized over the decision and it wouldn’t have been a courageous decision, it would have been a foregone conclusion. That he agonized over it and that it was “courageous”, clearly indicates that to him and his miniouns NOT doing it was an option. How is he less criticism worthy than Mr. Romney.
