As I recall, it was Obama and Obama alone who threatened to withhold Grandma and Grandpa's Social Security checks in the last Debt Ceiling fiasco. (Democrats seem to think hitting the ceiling each year is a budgetary goal. To them, the ceiling is the budget). Your right about one thing, after 2024 there really wont be any Social Security checks in the mail. In the face of Bankruptcy, the Democrats have opted to do nothing and attack those who feel they have a responsibility to make a plan and implement ideas to save the program.

Obama Administration Promises Veto of GOP Budget

As a part of the budget deal struck last August, automatic budget cuts will hit the federal budget across the board starting next year. Republicans in Congress have been working to try to identify a spending cuts package that doesn't slash Pentagon and Homeland Security funding.
