Mr. Mitchell, these numbers may lead you to believe entitlement reform is a possibility in the near future. But, try implementing the reforms and see how much the poll respondents scream when they realize it is they who will have to pay. Much akin to the NIMBY (not in my back yard) saying and doing are two different things. For instance, when the poll asks; do you think the gov't spends too much money the overwhelming response is, yes. When asked; do you think the gov't should cut spending on programs that benefit you, the answer is no. The truth comes out at the voting booth. Hence, Obama and the rest of the vote buyers.

As shown in the video series on the economics of government spending, I’m not a big fan of the welfare state, which is big government in the long run.

I’m also not a fan of bigger government in the short run, which is what we get from Keynesian economics and so-called stimulus.

But truth doesn’t matter in Washington if voters don’t agree with your position. Actually, truth may not matter even if voters are on your side. But there’s at least a chance to prevail against the prevailing culture of statism when voters support your position.
