And, should it really ever go beyond a token "you can't have a clip taller than you are" kind of ban, it won't make a difference for a long time. But eventually a functioning ban would reduce the total supply of guns, forcing the street value of guns to skyrocket. But the point is you just can't kill as many people as fast with a knife as you can with a semi-automatic rifle, no matter how hard you try.
