Jan@Oasis: Lovingly caring for people with no 'seeming' hope of recovery, or even of improvement, is what we are asked to do. Our care doesn't have to provide a cure, but it must convey our love. Someday, my mother may require sips of water to ease her mouth's dryness as she journeys on to her Home. I will provide those sips as long as they comfort her. Yes, 10 out of 10 people die. And no one is 'useful' every moment of their life. Just being human is sufficient to deserve loving care.

You are spot on, dear Eleanor. When will our human family wake up and realize that no amount of money can come close to the pricelessness of each of us? Eleanor, you are in my prayers. God bless you and your husband; you will, be assured, have glorious conversations in Heaven!

binc. you rock. yes, there is a curious mental disorder in existenced that allows "baby bumps" and "products of conception" to occupy the same cultural plane without seeming contradiction.

So, Aura dear, all Death Panels are free&clear to operate? Simply because something is legal doesn't make it moralðical too. As for encouraging mothers to murder their own babies, Planned Parenthood LEAPS to mind. Babies aren't less their mothers' (and fathers') children while in utero; in fact, they are more their children then, unseen by the world (and unfelt by all but their mothers). Abortion kills human beings at early stages in their lives, despite others' ludicrous denial of this biological fact. If some'thing' isn't alive, it doesn't grow. The plethora of maternity stores speaks to the truth of babies growing and their mothers purchasing the latest styles to accommodate their burgeoning offspring.

It is difficult to see "Michael Schiavo" and the words "sacred marriage agreement" (perhaps 'vow' is the word you're looking for..) in the same sentence without feeling as if my right shoe is on my left foot. As Terri was a devout Catholic woman, we can 'guess' that she would not have violated the tenets of her faith by an assisted suicide. Terri's family, selfish? To want desperately to give their daughter the loving care that her so-called 'husband' vehemently denied her? To provide therapy so Terri could rehabilitate to the greatest extent possible? I suspect Michael Schiavo was afraid Terri would recover sufficiently that she'd be able to finger him for the crime that caused her brain damage.

Michael Schiavo most probably caused Terri's brain damage by strangling his wife in a violent fit of temper, to which he was prone. He was quoted by one of Terri's nurses's as asking that nurse "Isn't the b**ch (Terri) dead yet?" He refused her the most basic therapy, even basic dental hygiene, in order to hasten her death. He was unfaithful to his marriage vow, conceiving two children while still married to Terri. At least he still COULD walk, him and his shoes. He needs our prayers, desperately.

The only way that will happen is if the model itself is improved. Longevity and therefore quality of life isn't immortality. How long do we have the 'right' to live? As long as we're still living, we have the right...not too tough to figure out or understand.

Good God, Soon20Questions: Terri Schiavo a waste of time and money? Then so are we all, for at some time in all our lives, we inconvenience another human being. Terri Schiavo did NOT have a stroke; she was most probably strangled, w/brain damage occurring from oxygen lack. For 'rational' substitute 'utilitarian' to describe your model society. If playing God is your concern, then each of us should receive every possible encouragement to live, regardless of our mental or physical state of health Just who affixes your claimed 'price tag' to the life of each human being? And to restate, there is no standard definition of 'brain death.' Check out Dr. Paul Byrne of Toledo, an expert on the subject.
