I wasn't really politically attuned in the 70s, but it seems that the attack on Nixon would be as likely today as it was then. Despite his many liberal actions, he WAS, after all, a Republican. W wasn't particularly conservative, either, spending like a drunken Democrat and even expanding Medicare. Still, the Ds and the press dutifully demonized him every day of his presidency, with just a few days off after 9/11. I do believe it's the R what makes 'em do it.

President Obama has been crisscrossing the country proclaiming the dire effects of March 1 if the Republicans in the House didn't bow to his demands. We don't know what his demands are, but he spent a lot of money accusing the GOP of not caving into them.
