I'm living in Florida now. The necessities of food and shelter here do not depend on high tech, complex trade and imports, or much in the way of a transportation system. Push come to shove, I think the worker bees and good ol' boys would be able to maintain decent stability and quality of life. Switzerland is a great country, but their success depends on their wise decisions on finance, industry and trade. If these collapse, Switzerland and other areas not self-sustaining could get nasty. A Rolex isn't worth much to a hungry man when food is scarce.

A reader from New York has a follow-up question for me.

Referencing a “Question of the Week” from last month, in which I expressed guarded optimism that America could be saved, she wants to know what I would do if things go the wrong way.

In other words, what if things go really wrong and America suffers a Greek-style fiscal collapse? And imagine how bad that might be since there wouldn’t be an IMF or European Central Bank capable of providing bailouts to the United States.
